Draining the Swamp

I’ll accept no lectures from Tory Grandees

Tony Staunton, the President of Plymouth Trades Union Council was outraged when the so-called “Conservative” Party criticised Labour Party MP’s for accepting unseemly large donations and gifts which could perhaps be perceived as bribes.

Mr Staunton then listed many instances of equally unseemly behaviour by the Conservative Party.

The implication was that voting for the extreme left will fix everything.

Draining the Swamp

As Tony Staunton (“I’ll accept no lectures from Tory grandees”, October 1st) quite rightly suggests, “The entire swamp must be drained”, but we also need to ask why the swamp is so large and the answer is obvious.

As government gets bigger and bigger with more and more laws restricting trade, the rewards for influencing politicians become bigger and bigger.

Voting for politicians who know the difference between right and wrong is obviously part of the solution, but the only viable long-term solution is voting for political parties that are totally committed to limited government.

That excludes both the hard-left political movements supported by Mr Staunton, and the soft-left Uni-Party politicians condemned by Mr Staunton.
