My name is Bernard Toolan and I first became aware that we had a problem back in 1967. I was 19 years old and had just  finished my first year at Hull University. 

Freddie Laker had just started his new airline that revolutionised air travel and I was booked on my first trip abroad. A months-long trip to Expo 67 in Montreal.

Before I left, David Steel had just introduced his bill to legalise abortion and the newspapers were all saying that a controversial private members bill could never succeed. When I got back, it had been passed without opposition from the Conservative Party.
