Trump is not the problem

The Old World Order is well and truly dead

Without mentioning the 30,000 innocent civilians killed by the IRGC,  Mr Staunton, a regular columnist for the Plymouth Herald, shared his opinion that the war against Iran is illegal and that the USA has been bombing nuclear energy installations rather than factories producing atom bombs.

The main point of the article is that the world is now a much more dangerous place and it is all the fault of President Donald J Trump.

My response (in the right hand column) was published in the Plymouth Herald on May 27th 2026.

Institutions have become self-serving

Tony Staunton (“The Old World order is well and truly dead”, March 31st) is making the classic mistake of blaming the messenger for the contents of the message. Global institutions exist to serve people, not the other way around. When they fail that test, honest reform or replacement is imperative.

Institutions like the U.N., the WHO, the IMF, and the sprawling climate bureaucracy, built in the aftermath of World War II to promote security, stability, health, and cooperation, have instead become self-serving, corrupt, ideologically captured, and detached from empirical reality.

The writing was already on the wall back in 2020 when the Abraham Accords were signed. President Trump and the neighbours of Iran could see that nuclear non-proliferation treaties are meaningless unless somebody enforces them, but the UN did nothing except talk and talk and talk.
